Artist's Statement !
"The schools and movements which have most influenced my work are Abstract Expressionism, Constructivism and Cubism. Some of my favorite artists are Julio Gonzales, Alexander Archipenko, Alexander Calder, Anthony Caro, David Smith and Henry Moore. The lessons I learned from these influences are simplification of form, economy of line, the importance of negative space and from Calder a sense of wonder and playfulness.
Working in metal presents a multitude of difficulties. The labor is strenuous and hot. I burn myself on a regular basis. My least favorite aspect is all the grinding that has to be done.
On a positive side, every piece of work has its own meaning, but underlying that strive to achieve a sense of movement and energy in my work. By putting the various elements in conflict with one another I hope to create the tension needed to achieve this goal. I have exhibited my work mostly in New York but also in New England, Pennsylvania and Italy. I hope when viewers look at my artwork that they experience a sense of optimism and the feeling that there is a certain nobility in man."
Sincerly, John Neumann
